Verruca Needling – Patient Information

Verruca needling is a specialist treatment used for persistent or resistant verrucae (warts), particularly when other treatments have been unsuccessful.

Please read the information below carefully before booking or undergoing treatment.

What is verruca needling?

Verruca needling is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
A fine sterile needle is used to repeatedly puncture the verruca, stimulating the body’s immune system to recognise and clear the viral infection.

This technique aims to trigger an immune response not only at the treated site, but sometimes at other verrucae as well.

Who is verruca needling suitable for?

Verruca needling may be considered if:

  • The verruca is long-standing or resistant to other treatments

  • Other conservative treatments have been unsuccessful

  • You are able to tolerate a local anaesthetic injection

Your podiatrist will assess whether this treatment is suitable for you.

Who is verruca needling NOT suitable for?

Verruca needling may not be appropriate if you:

  • Have poor circulation to the feet

  • Have impaired healing or immune function

  • Have a bleeding disorder or are on certain anticoagulant medications

  • Have a known allergy to local anaesthetic

  • Are unable to tolerate injections

Please inform the clinic of any medical conditions or medications before treatment.

What does the procedure involve?

  • The area is cleaned and numbed using a local anaesthetic

  • Once numb, the verruca is repeatedly punctured using a sterile needle

  • A dressing is applied after the procedure

The appointment lasts up to 60 minutes.

What can I expect after treatment?

  • Some soreness or discomfort is normal once the anaesthetic wears off

  • Mild swelling or bruising may occur

  • You may be advised to limit activity for 24-48 hours

  • A dressing will be required for a short period

Post-treatment advice will be given at your appointment.

Will I need follow-up appointments?

Yes.
Follow-up appointments are included and are used to:

  • Review healing

  • Monitor response to treatment

  • Provide further advice if needed

How effective is verruca needling?

Verruca needling can be effective, but no treatment guarantees complete resolution.
Some verrucae resolve fully, while others may improve gradually or require further management.

Your podiatrist will discuss realistic expectations with you.

Are there any risks?

As with any minor procedure, risks are small but may include:

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Infection

  • Delayed healing

  • Recurrence of the verruca

Your podiatrist will take appropriate measures to minimise risk.
