We always hear about the importance of good posture. And with good reason, as posture has an effect on many aspects of the body.

Poor posture and body language

As most of us know, poor posture can predispose us to neck pain, low back pain and other aches. But poor posture can also affect us in other ways. Check out my blog post ‘Poor posture and its effects‘.

Slouching, for example, has an impact on how we are seen by others. Meanwhile, a good posture makes us feel more confident and can lend us an air of authority. This is because posture is an integral part of body language. How we carry ourselves really is an important cue that people around us will unconsciously interpret.

Links to improve posture

Firstly, I recommend watching this short but very insightful TED-Ed talk about the benefits of good posture. This will hopefully provide motivation to work on your posture.

In osteopathic practice, I often recommend the Alexander Technique which is an approach to improving posture. This TEDx Talk by Angela Bradshaw offers a good introduction.

Osteopaths and poor posture

Because osteopaths often focus on the biomechanical aspect of the individual, patients commonly seek our advice on posture. And rightly so, as we practise observation as part of our examination skills during our osteopathic training.

If you would like further advice on posture, please book an Osteopathy appointment.
