Cranial osteopathy is a subtle form of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, especially the head (cranium). It is a gentle yet extremely powerful approach with broad-ranging benefits. After all, the cranial bones house the brain, cranial membranes and cerebrospinal fluid (the lymph of the central nervous system).
Cranial osteopathy works with the body’s natural cranial rhythm. Skilled practitioners can palpate the cranial rhythm and detect subtle movements within the skull, which reflect the body’s rhythmic pulsations that are believed to be connected to the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid, which supplies the central nervous system, and other bodily tissues. Through gentle manipulations of the skull bones, cranial osteopathy aims to balance these rhythms and enhance the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
Just like osteopathy, cranial osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly, as it is gentle and very safe.
People seek cranial osteopathy for various conditions, often finding relief from symptoms such as headaches, migraines, back and neck pain, and even digestive and menstrual problems. It’s also utilised as a treatment for stress and insomnia. Some practitioners and patients report improvements in overall well-being and a sense of relaxation following treatment.
Cranial osteopathy is especially beneficial in the following conditions:
As your Osteopath may ask you to undress to your underwear, please ensure you are wearing something that you are comfortable with.
For females, we recommend sports shorts and a sports bra. If you are not comfortable undressing, just let your Osteopath know and he or she will work around this.
Before your first consultation, there will be a GDPR and Consent Form emailed to you. Please fill this in before the consultation.
Cranial Osteopathy is very subtle. Some people are very receptive and feel things ‘move’, while other people are unaware of the effects. Response to treatment, however, is not determined by whether you feel things or not.
At Aston Clinic London, our osteopaths simply incorporate cranial techniques into our osteopathic appointments as required.
