Acupuncture: a better option against pain than opioids

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), a pivotal health standards authority in the UK, has recently issued new guidelines for managing chronic pain. These guidelines represent a significant shift in treatment recommendations, emphasising non-pharmacological options over traditional painkillers, which are often associated with addiction and lack of efficacy.

Key Recommendations from NICE:

  • Acupuncture as a Preferred Alternative:

NICE recommends acupuncture as a more effective and safer alternative to opioid medications for chronic pain management. This endorsement follows the analysis of 27 studies, which revealed that acupuncture not only alleviates pain but also enhances quality of life when compared to placebo treatments or “sham” acupuncture within three months.
  • Ineffectiveness of Traditional Painkillers:

The agency’s review highlighted the ineffectiveness of standard painkillers such as paracetamol, NSAIDs, benzodiazepines, and opioids. Particularly concerning is the risk of long-term harm associated with opioids, reinforcing the need for alternative treatment strategies.
  • Physical Exercise and Psychological Therapies:

Alongside acupuncture, NICE advocates for physical exercise and psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). These methods have proven effective in managing chronic pain and are recommended to be integrated into patients’ treatment plans.
  • Antidepressants for Pain Management:

The guidelines also suggest the use of antidepressants as a viable option for chronic pain management. This recommendation is based on their ability to address both pain and the often[1]associated emotional distress. We propose herbal antidepressants such as St John’s Wort, skullcap, gotu kola, or valerian to minimise the risks of side-effects.
